Engineered American Black Walnut: Why 100% Real Timber Matters

Two floors can both be sold as "engineered walnut" and have almost nothing in common under the surface. One is a walnut veneer barely a millimetre thick glued to a fibreboard core. The other is real timber from top to bottom. They look similar on day one. They age like different products, because they are. Why walnut should be engineered at all

Timber is hygroscopic — it drinks moisture from humid air and releases it in dry air, swelling and shrinking across the board's width as it goes. Perth serves up both extremes every year: damp winters, then months of dry heat with the air-conditioning running. A solid walnut board handles that with movement; a cross-engineered board handles it with structure. Cross-lamination locks the layers against each other so width movement drops dramatically — the industry's own guidance is that engineered construction moves far less than solid, which is exactly what you want under a wide, dark board that shows every gap.

What's inside matters more than the label

Here's the part the label doesn't tell you. In an engineered board, hardness and re-sandability come from the face layer — the actual walnut on top. Industry guidance is blunt about thin veneers: when the face layer is very thin, the core underneath starts dictating how the floor performs. A 1–2mm veneer over fibreboard cannot be meaningfully re-sanded — one careful sand at best, often none — so the first badly worn patch or deep scratch is a floor problem, not a maintenance job. Fibreboard cores are also the least forgiving of moisture of any core type.

Stabilised Solid® is our answer, and it's patented: a genuine American Black Walnut wear layer over a cross-laminated core of real hardwood — no fibreboard anywhere in the board. 100% timber from top to bottom, 15mm or 18mm thick, in 220mm and 260mm wide-boards up to 2.5 metres. The wear layer takes up to four re-sands, which in a family home is the better part of a century of renewals. That's what the lifetime structural warranty is standing on.

The questions that expose a cheap engineered board

Take these four questions to any quote, including ours:

How thick is the walnut wear layer? Under 2mm means the floor can't be renewed. What is the core made of? "HDF" or "fibreboard" is the budget answer; real timber is the premium one. How many times can it be re-sanded? Get it in writing. What exactly does the warranty cover, for how long? A 10-year warranty on a floor that can't be re-sanded tells you how long the maker expects it to look good.

Is engineered walnut "fake" walnut?

No — the surface you live on is real American Black Walnut either way. The question is what's underneath it and how thick the real timber is. Ours is timber all the way down.

Does engineered walnut feel different underfoot to solid?

Direct-stuck engineered timber at 15–18mm feels indistinguishable from solid — firm, quiet, warm. The hollow sound people dislike comes from cheap floating floors, not from engineered construction itself.

Is engineered walnut suitable for Perth's climate?

It's the most suitable format — cross-lamination is precisely the defence against our humidity swings. Acclimatisation and correct expansion allowance at install still matter, and they're standard practice on every Lifewood floor.
