The Farmers Behind Our Blackbutt and Spotted Gum Aren't Clearing Land. They're Thinning It.

Lifewood's Blackbutt and Spotted Gum are mostly sourced from farm forestry, not state forest — private landholders across northern New South Wales and southern Queensland thinning naturally regenerating native forest on their own paddocks, for both timber and grazing, under government codes of practice.

The first thing I noticed, driving around farm forestry properties in Queensland, was the difference in the pasture itself. On paddocks that had been thinned in previous years, the grass was thick and healthy. On paddocks where the trees — around thirty years old by then — had been left to grow overgrown and were only just about to be harvested, the grass was sparse. Those paddocks didn't look like a grazing farm anymore at all. There was no livestock on them.

That's the part of our supply chain most people never think about. Lifewood's Blackbutt and Spotted Gum don't come from state forest. They're mostly sourced from farm forestry — private landholders across northern NSW and southern Queensland managing native forest and regrowth on their own paddocks, under government codes of practice, for both timber and grazing — with a smaller share coming from farmer-owned plantations on the same properties. And the two purposes aren't in competition. They're the same job.

The problem with a paddock full of trees

A eucalypt paddock that's never been thinned isn't doing the farmer any favours. The Queensland Government's own eucalypt woodland management guideline puts a number on it: as tree basal area climbs toward 20 square metres per hectare, pasture yield can fall from around 3,000 kilograms per hectare to under 500. The mechanism is straightforward — eucalypt roots reach deeper for water than pasture grasses can, so a dense stand of trees is drinking the moisture the grass needs, on top of shading it out. Fewer, larger trees beat a thicket of small ones, for pasture and for timber value alike.

It's also not doing the trees any favours. Left to itself, a dense cohort of naturally regenerated Spotted Gum or Blackbutt does what any crowded stand does: it thins itself. The dominant stems shade out their weaker neighbours, which spend years suppressed before most of them die anyway — wasted growth, wasted years, nothing to show for it but standing deadwood. Forestry Corporation NSW's own silviculture manual describes exactly this process. The forest was always going to thin itself. The only question is whether that happens by accident, over decades, with nothing recovered — or on purpose, with usable logs coming off and the remaining trees given the room to put on real growth.

I saw this for myself in 2020, when I travelled to the hills region east of the Gold Coast to meet a logging contractor named Kevin, because Lifewood buys Blackbutt and Spotted Gum out of that country and I wanted to see the sustainability of it firsthand rather than take it on faith. Kevin is a second-generation timber harvester — his father worked the same farms thirty years before him, and Kevin was now harvesting some of those same properties again. He drove me between paddocks that day, and the difference was obvious even to someone who isn't a forester. On the blocks where the trees had grown too dense, the pasture underneath was thin and struggling. On properties Kevin had harvested previously, the pasture had come back thick and healthy, and the cattle had returned to graze it. Same country, same species, same family of contractors managing it across two generations — the only difference was whether the trees had been thinned.

Why the government treats this as forestry, not clearing

This isn't an informal arrangement between a farmer and a chainsaw. In NSW, harvesting native forest on private land — including farm forestry paddocks — runs under a Private Native Forestry Plan approved by Local Land Services, operating under one of four regional Codes of Practice. The Northern NSW Code, which covers the Blackbutt and Spotted Gum country Lifewood sources from, sets a legal floor: at least 14 square metres of basal area per hectare has to stay standing after harvest, no matter what. Habitat trees with hollows are protected. Regeneration gets checked at two, six and ten years after harvest, and if the site isn't recovering the way it should, the landholder has to fix it.

Queensland runs a parallel system under its own self-assessable native forest practice code — minimum stocking of 150 timber trees per hectare in higher-rainfall hardwood forest, habitat tree retention scaled to scarcity, watercourse buffers set by stream size. And Queensland's rules draw a genuine legal line that matters to this story: thinning regrowth purely to clear land for grazing doesn't qualify for the lighter-touch approval pathway. It has to be justified as forestry — managing density, timber production, forest health. The grazing benefit is real, but it's the by-product of doing forestry properly, not the other way around.

Private native forests make up more than 10 million hectares in Queensland alone and supply roughly half the state's native hardwood. As state-owned native timber harvesting winds down in South East Queensland, farm forestry isn't a side note to the hardwood supply chain. It's becoming more of the whole story.

The science says the system is working

None of this matters much if the codes are just paperwork. So it's worth pointing at the actual research. A 2021 study in Frontiers in Forests and Global Change looked at southeast Queensland's native forests using 315 permanent sample plots, some with records going back to 1931 — over ninety years of measurement, more than 3,300 individual observations. It found that selective harvesting has not reduced the density of large, old trees at a regional scale. If anything, regeneration and recruitment of new trees increased. The researchers found little evidence that selective harvesting and thinning have damaged growth rates, timber production, or carbon storage across close to 9.5 million hectares of forest.

That's not a marketing claim. It's ninety years of plots, remeasured, published, and peer-reviewed. It's the difference between a farmer's practical sense that thinning works and an actual answer to the question of whether it's sustainable at scale.

What happens to the log after it leaves the farm

Sustainable harvesting on the farm is only half the story. The other half is what happens to that log once it reaches a mill — because most of a hardwood log, even a good one, never becomes usable timber at all. Industry-wide, Australian hardwood sawmilling recovers around 41% of a log's volume as sawn product of any grade — meaning well over half of every log is sawdust, offcuts and residue before a single board is even graded. And most mills are chasing premium logs in the first place, which narrows what they'll buy from a thinning operation to only the best few stems in any given load.

That matters directly for the economics of thinning. If a farmer or forester can only sell the handful of premium logs out of a paddock, thinning barely pays for itself. The offcuts and sawdust that come from that milling process don't get wasted either. At our manufacturing facility in Vietnam, that residue fuels an on-site boiler that heats the kiln dry room, bringing every board to the right moisture content using the same log it came from. Nothing about the process needed to be marketed as sustainable for this to be true — it's just how the numbers work when you're not chasing premium logs to begin with.

What this means for the floor in your home

I come from an agricultural science background, and I spent my early career working in farming before I came to Lifewood. That's given me a soft spot for the farming community that's never gone away — they're salt-of-the-earth people who work hard, often for very little, and I don't think that gets said often enough. Knowing that Lifewood can turn what comes off their paddocks into a finished product, and put some extra income back into those families' hands, is what makes the harder parts of this industry worth it to me.

The thinning that produced the log is the same thinning that kept the grass growing and the cattle fed, and because we buy the log the farmer can actually sell — not just the premium fraction — that thinning stays worth doing. That's not a story we're telling to sound sustainable. It's the actual mechanics of where most of this timber comes from, under codes of practice with real numbers behind them, backed by decades of measured evidence that the system holds up.
