Spotted Gum vs Blackbutt flooring — what is the difference?
Both are premium Australian hardwood species, but they differ in colour, hardness, and character. Spotted Gum (Corymbia maculata) has a Janka hardness of 11kN and features distinctive wavy grain patterns with a colour range from pale cream to rich chocolate brown — ideal for bold, characterful floors. Blackbutt (Eucalyptus pilularis) has a Janka hardness of 9.1kN and a more consistent pale golden tone, making it a versatile choice for contemporary interiors. Both species are available in Lifewood's Stabilised Solid® engineered construction with a lifetime warranty.
What is Lifewood's Stabilised Solid® technology?
Stabilised Solid® is Lifewood's patented flooring construction technology — the key innovation that sets Lifewood apart from standard timber flooring suppliers. Unlike conventional solid hardwood (which is single-cut from a log and prone to expansion, contraction, and cupping), Stabilised Solid® engineers the full-thickness board with 100% genuine hardwood from top to bottom across three layers, cross-bonded for stability. The result is a floor that looks, feels, and sands like solid timber, but with superior dimensional stability — suitable for direct stick installation over concrete and under-floor heating, with a lifetime structural warranty.
