TIMBER FLOORING QUESTIONS

Got any questions? Lifewood has you covered. Ask our friendly team over the phone or in-person. We’re happy to help out!

What makes your timber flooring different?

Lifewood’s timber flooring incorporates its unique patented Stabilised Solid™ technology, ensuring exceptional stability by combining the best features of solid timber and engineered flooring. Each wood flooring board is made with 100% natural timber from top to bottom, providing the beauty and authenticity of solid wood while being more stable and less prone to warping or movement. Additionally, Lifewood floors are sustainable, handcrafted, and backed by a lifetime guarantee, making them a premium choice for any home.

Will your timber floors scratch?

Lifewood timber floors are highly resistant to scratching thanks to their dense composition and high-quality protective coating. However, like all timber floors, they are not entirely scratch-proof. Everyday wear and tear, particularly in high-traffic areas, may result in light surface marks. To minimise scratching, it’s recommended to use felt protectors under furniture and avoid dragging heavy objects across the floor.

How many times can I sand and polish?

Lifewood’s timber can be sanded and polished multiple times over their lifetime. Depending on the thickness of the wear layer, you can expect to re-sand your floor between 2 and 3 times on average.

How do I clean my floors?

Cleaning Lifewood timber floors is easy and low-maintenance. Use a vacuum or broom to remove dirt and dust for everyday cleaning. For deeper cleaning, mop with a damp (not wet) mop using a pH-neutral cleaner designed specifically for timber. Avoid excessive water and harsh chemicals, as these can damage the finish. Using rugs or mats in high-traffic areas is also a good idea to protect your floors.

What is the difference between solid timber and engineered timber flooring?

Solid timber flooring is made from a single, solid piece of hardwood—such as Blackbutt, Oak, or Jarrah—throughout the entire board. It’s valued for its timeless aesthetic, long lifespan, and ability to be sanded and refinished multiple times. However, it’s also prone to expansion and contraction with changes in temperature and humidity, which can lead to cupping or warping if not installed correctly. It often requires acclimatisation before installation and is typically more expensive.

Engineered timber flooring, on the other hand, is constructed with a real hardwood top layer (called a veneer) bonded to a multi-layered core—usually plywood or high-density fiberboard (HDF). This layered design provides greater stability, making it more resistant to environmental changes. It’s typically easier and faster to install and more cost-effective, but the ability to refinish it depends on the thickness of the top layer.

Introducing Lifewood Stabilised Solid™ – The Best of Both Worlds

At Lifewood, we offer a unique flooring innovation called Stabilised Solid™. Unlike conventional engineered timber, it’s not made with plywood or softwood cores. Instead, it features:

  • A solid timber top layer
  • A patented, same timber cross-engineered core that resists movement
  • Three layers of the same hardwood, 100% real timber
  • The ability to be re-sanded like solid timber
  • Greater structural stability and longevity
  • Non-toxic, eco-friendly construction with low emissions

This advanced structure combines the beauty and durability of solid timber with the stability and convenience of engineered flooring—ideal for Australian conditions.

How much does timber flooring cost in Australia?

When planning your dream floor, cost is one of the most important factors—and rightly so. But with so many timber flooring options available, pricing can vary significantly depending on material type, board construction, installation method, and finish quality.

Average Timber Flooring Costs in Australia

According to industry averages, the cost of timber flooring typically ranges from:

  • $60 to $150+ per m² for materials
  • $30 to $50 per m² for installation

This brings the total cost to approximately $90 to $200+ per m², depending on whether you choose softwood, hardwood, engineered, or premium stabilised boards.

Factors That Influence Price

  • Type of Timber:
  • Softwoods (e.g. pine) are more affordable but less durable.
  • Hardwoods (e.g. Blackbutt, Spotted Gum) are longer-lasting and more expensive.
  • Engineered timber provides a balance of value and performance.
  • Board Construction:
  • Solid timber is traditional but more prone to warping.
  • Engineered timber (like Lifewood’s Stabilised Solid™) offers premium performance and long-term value.
  • Installation Method:
  • Floating floors are cheaper.
  • Direct stick or secret nail installations provide a superior finish but add to the cost.

Why Lifewood Offers Exceptional Value

While our floors may not be the cheapest per square metre, Lifewood’s patented Stabilised Solid™ technology is designed to provide unmatched durability, sustainability, and beauty over a lifetime. Our customers see the value in:

  • Boards that don’t cup, warp, or split – even in Australian climate conditions
  • Lifetime warranty for peace of mind
  • Sustainably sourced Australian timbers
  • Health-safe, non-toxic manufacturing
  • Premium look and feel that adds long-term value to your home

Can timber flooring be used in kitchens or bathrooms?

Yes — with the right type of timber flooring, you absolutely can.

Traditionally, timber flooring has been avoided in kitchens and bathrooms due to concerns about moisture and warping. But with innovations like Lifewood’s Stabilised Solid™ technology, those concerns are all resolved.

Why Moisture Matters

Kitchens and bathrooms are high-moisture zones, with humidity, spills, and temperature fluctuations. This environment poses a challenge for conventional solid timber flooring, which tends to:

  • Expand and contract with moisture
  • Cup, warp, or swell over time
  • Require high maintenance and careful sealing

That’s why many traditional flooring providers recommend against using timber in these areas — unless it’s engineered for stability.

The Lifewood Difference

Lifewood’s patented Stabilised Solid™ boards are designed to resist moisture movement, making them uniquely suited for humid or spill-prone areas like kitchens and even powder rooms.

Key benefits:

  • Stabilised timber core prevents warping and cupping
  • Precision engineering for tight seams and spill resistance
  • Premium finishes that withstand daily wear and moisture exposure
  • Suitable for kitchen zones and light wet areas (excluding fully wet rooms like showers)

Installed by our kitchen business Seaform Perth, many of Lifewood’s floors have been fitted in designer kitchens with stunning results.

What About Bathrooms?

While full bathrooms with showers or tubs remain a complex space for timber, powder rooms, ensuites (with good ventilation), and dry bathroom zones can still benefit from Lifewood’s engineered timber — with proper installation and sealing.

We recommend:

  • Ensuring excellent ventilation
  • Wiping spills quickly
  • Avoiding standing water over long periods

Real Results from Real Homes

Many Lifewood customers have installed our premium boards in open-plan kitchens and coastal homes, where moisture and humidity are a constant factor. Their floors have held up beautifully — without the cupping and gapping you might expect from traditional timber.

In Summary: Yes, You Can.

If you’re after the warmth and luxury of real timber in your kitchen or bathroom, Lifewood is your safest choice.

  • Engineered to resist movement
  • Backed by a lifetime warranty
  • Installed in thousands of kitchens across Australia

How long does the installation process take?

Lifewood’s installation process is efficient, with most timber floors installed within 14 days. This time frame depends on the project’s size and the installation’s complexity. Lifewood’s patented installation method eliminates the need for post-installation sanding or polishing, so you can walk on your new floor almost immediately after installation is complete.
